Windows 10 and DirectX 12

Recent articles highlight the performance improvements that many home computing and PC gamers can find when they upgrade to Windows 10. The new DirectX 12 graphics drivers help boost the speed of some older graphics cards and chipsets, making games you used to play look better and run smoother. It can also help your PC play games that you thought it might not be able to manage.

Naturally, not everyone knows what type of graphics chip is in their PC, but generally, if you’ve bought a PC in the last 18 months, your graphics hardware should be DirectX 12 compatible. There’s a simple way to check, and that might make you think about upgrading to Windows 10, if you were otherwise happy with your old OS.

If you want to make sure, type “Device Manager” into the Search box on the Start Menu. Open the menu marked Display Adaptor, and you’ll find out what type of graphics hardware you have. It usually lists an NVIDIA, AMD, or INTEL brand with a series of numbers. The numbers are the important part, but use the whole title in a Google search. Ask, “is brand XXXX directx 12 compatible?” and you should find out your answer through one of the search engine results pages.
