PC Buying Tips 101

Buying a PC or laptop is a big and expensive commitment. Although PCs are generally very hardy and with a little maintenance will serve you well for several years, you do have to upgrade every once in a while, not only because your PC becomes irritatingly slow and sluggish but also to keep up to date with the latest technology. But how often should you really be buying a new PC?

First of all, you need to figure out why you think you need to upgrade …

My PC is slow and it’s driving me crazy!

Generally, PCs for home computing have a lifespan of four to six years before they start becoming slow, sluggish and glitchy. It could simply be that you need to tidy up your disk space or upgrade your hard drive.

If you’ve given your PC all the love, care and attention it needs to run smoothly and it’s still failing you, it’s probably time to upgrade.

A brand new operating system is out and it looks all shiny – I want!

It’s tempting to splash out on a new PC when you hear about all the awesome features a new operating system has. However, it may cheaper to buy and install the software on your existing PC than to buy a new computer. Your computer repair specialist will be able to do this for you if you feel unsure about doing it yourself. If, however, your PC is several years old and you need newer software to run a specific game or program, it may be worth investing in a new PC with better hardware; your game or program is likely to perform much better.

I just really want the latest awesome PC!

If you’re a techy person who loves gadgets, it’s likely that you’re going to go ahead and buy a new PC, just because you want it! There’s no problem with this, but to fund your technology addiction we recommend you reformat your old PC and sell it on, particularly if it’s in good working order and performs well.
