Hard Disk Never Stops Running

Even on a modern, super-fast computer, the demands of Windows can put a lot of stress on a computer’s hard disk drive, slowing down performance. Most computers have a hard drive activity light located somewhere on the case front, and if that’s always lit up, it is a good indication that your hard drive is doing too much of the work, making your programs and the system wait for it and preventing you from using the computer at its full power.

The simplest and most common explanation for this is that the hard drive is almost full, causing it to juggle many files in the remaining space. On your PC, go to My Computer (or ‘Computer’ on Windows 7 or later), and you can see how much hard disk space you have free. If it is nearly full, then it is time to delete unwanted files or applications. Large video files or old games you no longer play, will free up plenty of space in a few seconds.

If there’s plenty of disk space free, then on older computers a busy hard drive is probably a sign that you don’t have enough memory to run all the applications you are attempting to manage. A cheap memory upgrade by your local computer repair expert is a simple solution to this problem. We can find the right memory type for your computer and ensure it is fitted correctly. Memory is low cost nowadays and a memory upgrade is often the best way to give your overall computing experience a significant boost.

On newer machines, a constantly busy hard drive light might indicate one of several issues. For a start, go to the ‘Computer’ Hard Disk Drive screen again. Right click your hard drive icon and choose ‘Properties’. Click the ‘Tools’ tab and select ‘Check Now’ in the error checking option, to see if your hard drive may be failing. If it reports there are any issues, now would be a good time to back up all your data and buy a replacement hard drive.

Again, we can help install it if you are not confident about working inside your computer case. Another option in the Tools menu is the Defragmentation option that will rearrange the content on the hard drive to make it more efficient in operation.

As a final important reminder, please ensure that you maintain a regular and systematic BACKUP routine for all of your important documents, photos, videos and other files. Hard drives can and do fail, often without any notice and backing up your files regularly can be a lifesaver when disaster strikes.
