Linux, Android, and Haiku OS

Linux is widely considered to be the definitive alternative operating system. It’s a heavy-duty OS with the same capabilities you’d expect from Windows and Mac operating systems. What’s more, it comes in a variety of different flavours or ‘distributions’ that suit the needs of different types of computer user.

These are assembled by different companies and individuals. This is possible because Linux is an ‘open source’ OS, which means anyone can get hold of its underlying programs and edit or organise them to produce slightly different results. If you’re looking for an alternative to Windows 10 or the Mac OSX that feels familiar but which is more fine-tuned to your needs, it’s worth looking for a Linux distribution that matches your requirements. Each distribution includes different default software, so you’re bound to find one that suits your needs.

You may already use Android on your smartphone or tablet. However, it might surprise you that you can download the OS for laptops and desktop computers too. The Android PC OS works very similarly to its mobile and tablet antecedents; what’s more, it also looks practically identical. This makes it easy to use if you’re already well-acquainted with the software. However, it’s worth noting that Android doesn’t allow PC users to run more than one application at a time, which may be off-putting for more intensive users.

Haiku is a lightweight OS that evokes the endearingly simple operating systems of the 1990s. It is actually a re-implemented (and slightly retooled) version of BeOS, an operating system from that decade. It has a retro charm, but lacks the power and capabilities of Windows, OSX and Linux.

There are many more operating systems out there, but these are some of the best. We recommend choosing Linux if you need a powerful and versatile OS, Android if you need a familiar, convenient one, and Haiku if you just need something simple and reliable.
