Keep your PC Cool and Quiet
Updated: Jun 8, 2020
A constantly whirring fan on your home computer is never attractive. In most desktops or laptops, it is a sign that your computer has got too much dust in the vents or on the fan itself, or that the cooler is starting to come away from your CPU, potentially causing overheating issues.
That can result in the system slowing the PC down to keep it cool, or the whole computer shutting down to prevent damage. Modern PCs all use thermal protection systems to look after the key components, so it is incredibly hard to actually fry a modern computer.
A shutdown doesn’t mean the PC is broken, but does mean you need to get it looked at. We can help with a quick computer repair to fix the problem and improve the situation. In most cases, it is often a matter of using blasts of compressed air from a can, some cotton buds and some cleaner to remove any dirt from the fan and around the inner vents.
You can do this at home, but if you’re worried about damaging your PC, we can do it for you. A more professional and long lasting fix is to replace some of the cooling system components. In some cases, we may need to remove the cooler and apply some fresh thermal paste – that’s the magic ingredient that transfers heat away from the processor towards the fan – and then reattach the cooler.
We can also attach a new cooler if yours is old or struggling to keep up. When a PC is built, the makers generally use cheap or stock paste and coolers which have a limited lifespan, so by changing these you can extend the life of your PC and save the processor from excess heating.
If you are really fed up with the noise from a fan, then on desktop machines we can provide closed water cooling systems or ambient cooling (if there’s room) that reduce the noise level to zero.
If you have a noisy old hard disk drive, we can also replace that with a silent solid state drive that will help reduce noise further and will perform vastly faster. We can also copy over the data, so you can pick up right where you left off.
Whatever your PC or home computing problem, we’re happy to take a look and provide some advice to make things better.
